Modimolle is situated in the Waterberg northwest of Bela Bela. Modimolle means "place of the spirits" and is named after the prominent hill which is regarded by the locals as holy. The original name of the town "Nylstroom" has an interesting story attached to it. Nyl is the Afrikaans word for the Nile, and it is here that in 1886 some intrepid, albeit ill-informed Voortrekkers thought they had arrived in Egypt.
