Mookgophong is about 160km north from Pretoria along the N1 at the foot of the Swaershoek Mountains. Originally known as Naboomspruit, named after the huge candelabra tree, the naboom, the new name of Mookgophong essentially has the same meaning. Today the town is known for its hot springs, fixed farming and holiday resorts. The town is surrounded by numerous nature reserves.
